Blended Learning with Laptops for all Junior High Students
Beginning in the fall of the 2013-14 school year, Vanlue School will distribute laptops to all students in 7th through 10th grades which adds to the 7th and 8th grades who already received them last year. The laptops will be used in class and at home to create a true, multimedia-based, blended learning environment. Right from the start our Junior High Teachers, Mr. Jacobs (Math/Science), Mrs. Kennedy (Language Arts/Social Studies), and Mr. Richards (Health) have skyrocketed this initiative last school year by developing digital resources to aid in the education of our junior high students. This initiative has created an opportunity for all of our students to have access to their educational classroom materials 24/7, so when the student leaves our building, the learning continues. This has provided a tremendous opportunity for parents to know what is happening in their child’s class, and provides them the resources they need to aid in their child’s learning outside of school.
The digital resources currently being used to aid in learning by the Vanlue teachers include, digital textbooks, recorded lessons with audio and video in math and other subjects, student work and presentations embedded as digital resources, project and assignment instructions and requirements, guided notes, homework assignments, video and multimedia resource links, and online assessments. This diverse toolset has helped to engage our students, and reached out to students of all learning styles, to provide a great opportunity for all students to be successful.
In the future, Vanlue School is looking to expand this laptop initiative by two grade levels each year until all students in grades 7-12 will be provided a laptop to aid in their educational experience. This educational transformation should be complete by the start of 2014-15 school year.
